Damien Levasseur

Damien-bio-Photo-400x600Damien Levasseur, born in Montreal in 1990, is a gypsy jazz guitarist and a music teacher. It’s at the age of 14 that he discovered a passion for the music of Django Reinhardt and improvisation. Without wasting time, he started learning the subtleties of this mythical style called « Gypsy Jazz » or « Jazz Manouche » and work the art of improvisation as an autodidact. Two years later, Damien met Lou Boustani and joined the Montreal group « Maânouche Swing » with whom he recorded two albums. When he was 16, he won the 1st prize of the Montreal Jazz festival contest and also the « Grand prix de la guitare de Montréal » three years later in 2010. Several guitar player influenced his playing; from the authentic sound of Django to the modern approach of Bireli lagrène. Mainly interested by jazz, Damien is inspired by the old swing from the ’30s as well as the newest modern jazz guitarists like Kurt Rosenwinkel. In 2012, Damien Levasseur formed the gypsy jazz group Tcha-Badjo with the guitarist Charles Fréchette; This project was made to mix music and travel. After two years touring, 300 concerts, 35 countries and 3 albums, Damien is now planing his new 2015 European tour.

Damien Levasseur, né à Montréal en 1990, est un guitariste de jazz manouche et professeur de musique. C’est vers l’âge de 14 ans qu’il se découvre une passion pour la musique de Django Reinhardt et l’improvisation.  Sans perdre de temps, il commence à apprendre les subtilités de ce style mythique appelé « Jazz Manouche »ou « Gypsy Jazz » et travaille l’art d’improviser de manière autodidacte. 2 ans plus tard, Damien rencontre Lou Boustani et rejoint le groupe de Montréal « Maânouche swing » avec qui il enregistre deux albums.  À 16 ans il remporte le 1er prix du concours du festival de Jazz de Montréal et également le Grand prix de la guitare de Montréal trois ans plus tard en 2010.  Plusieurs guitaristes influencent son jeu; du son authentique de Django à l’approche moderne de Bireli Lagrène. Principalement intéressé par le jazz, Damien s’inspire aussi bien du swing des années 30
que du jazz moderne des guitaristes plus jeunes tel que Kurt Rosenwinkel. En 2012, Damien Levasseur crée en compagnie du guitariste Charles Fréchette le groupe de jazz manouche Tcha-Badjo; projet qui avait pour but de mêler voyage et musique. Après 2 ans de tournée, 300 concerts, 35 pays et 3 albums, Damien se prépare maintenant à une nouvelle tournée en Europe pour l’année 2015…
